Sanctions on horizon to cut ESRC grant applications

More than two-thirds of respondents to an Economic and Social Research Council consultation support the introduction of researcher sanctions as a possible option to reduce demand for grants.

The council, which has seen a 33 per cent increase in grant applications over the past five years and had a success rate of just 16 per cent in 2010-11, issued the consultation over the spring and summer as part of attempts to drive down application rates. The results were published on 25 October.
