First evidence of Higgs particle revealed

Members of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, have presented the first “solid evidence” of the existence of the Higgs boson.

The results, presented by ATLAS collaboration leader Fabiola Gianotti on 13 December, show an excess of “events” at a mass of around 126 GeV, a measure of the mass of a particle.
