Data fraud ‘worryingly prevalent’

One in seven researchers responding to a survey by the British Medical Journal said they had witnessed colleagues intentionally altering or fabricating data for the purpose of publication, the journal reported on 12 January.

The survey was emailed to 9,036 academics and clinicians who had submitted articles to the BMJ or acted as peer reviewers for the journal. More than 2,700 responses were received.
