Welsh government urged to drop plans to control university funding

The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, universities and students have all urged the Welsh government to abandon plans to award itself powers to fund university activities directly, without going through the funding council.

The government closed the consultation on a white paper, The Further and Higher Education Wales Bill, on 24 September. Responses seen by Research Europe’s sister publication, Research Fortnight, warn that the plans threaten the principles of institutional autonomy set out in the 1992 Further and Higher Education Acts.
