Gut research most underfunded among infectious disease

Research into gastrointestinal infections receives the lowest level of investment relative to the burden it poses, according to a study published in the Lancet.

The study, by Michael Head, manager of the Infectious Disease Research Network at University College London, found that over a 13-year period, gastrointestinal infection research in the UK received £254 million, or 9.7 per cent, of all funding for infectious diseases.
