Star academics launch lobby group for university freedom

A group of high-profile academics has launched the Council for the Defence of British Universities, saying that influential figures are needed to reformulate and defend academic values. Members include naturalist David Attenborough, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, astronomer royal Martin Rees and biographer Claire Tomalin. The council’s mission statement says that higher education has many interest groups but none exist to ensure institutional arrangements foster academic values.
