Gender balance depends on ‘slow and painful’ cultural change, MPs hear

Achieving gender equality in science will depend on a “slow and painful” culture change, according to astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell.

Speaking to the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Committee on 18 December, Bell Burnell said that cultural influences are the main reason for the underrepresentation of women at the top levels of her discipline.
