Animal procedures up in UK

The number of scientific procedures carried out on animals in the UK increased by 2 per cent in 2011, according to statistics released by the government. The figures, published on 10 July, show that just over 3.79 million such procedures were started in UK in 2011. This is 1.08m more procedures than in 2000 and 68,100 more than in 2010. However the government says the increase is mainly due to breeding to produce genetically modified animals.
