Funders cooperate to support CFS research

Researchers and charities working on chronic fatigue syndrome are getting together to pool their research funding, following the winding down of the Medical Research Council’s CFS expert group.

The new collaborative will be launched on 22 April at an event hosted by the Wellcome Trust and will be led by Stephen Holgate, professor of immunopharmacology at the University of Southampton. He previously chaired the MRC expert group, which was established in 2008 in response to concerns that research on CFS and myalgic encephalomyelitis needed more attention from the council.

The MRC ring-fenced £1.5 million for CFS in 2011, which has now been spent, and it hasn’t promised any more dedicated funding. However, the council says it still classes CFS/ME as a “high priority” for its responsive-mode grants.
