University spending increases faster than earnings

University income rose by only 1.4 per cent in 2011-12, while expenditure increased by 1.8 per cent. Figures published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency show that in the academic year 2011-12, total university income reached £27.9 billion, up slightly from £27.6bn in 2010-11. Expenditure in 2011-12 reached £26.7bn, up from the £26.2bn spent in 2010-11.
