A consortium of 22 research institutions in 17 nations, including the British Antarctic Survey, has secured Horizon 2020 funding to proceed with a five-year programme to increase Europe's polar research capabilities, and improve relationships between researchers, policymakers and local communities.
EU-PolarNet will receive €2 million to develop a European polar research programme and the supporting infrastructure, the consortium announced on 19 May.
Other ambitions for the group set out by Karin Lochte, a project coordinator at consortium member the Alfred Wegener Institute, in Germany, included the improvement and strengthening of international cooperation in polar research and to establish a closer dialogue between researchers and the European Commission.
