Carolyn Fairbairn, the former director of strategy at both the BBC and ITV, has been appointed as the next director-general of the CBI industry lobby group.
Cambridge economics graduate Fairbairn worked in the Number 10 policy unit between 1995 and 1997, advising on health and social services, and was previously a partner at management consultant McKinsey and Company.
She holds several non-executive directorships at companies and organisations, which she will resign from before starting in the role at CBI, although she will remain a trustee of the charity Marie Curie.
