The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s schemes to kick-start commercial applications of research can be a boon to tech-transfer novices, as Ben Upton finds out.

“For three years we were in this awful gap,” Yorck Ramachers says of the time before he applied for funding from the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Follow-on Funding scheme.

Ramachers is a reader in particle physics at the University of Warwick, and together with his colleague Gavin Bell, a group leader in materials physics, he was convinced that the ultra-violet sensor technology they had developed with previous STFC grants must have all manner of applications. But they had struggled to pin one down, much less move forward with it.
