To win funding, pragmatism is as important as ingenuity

As a former Natural Environment Research Council panellist, Daniel Parsons (pictured), professor in sedimentology at the University of Hull, knew the prosaic project management aspects of a bid can be as vital as the science.

As he tells Research Fortnight below, he deployed this knowledge to full effect to win £106,433 in the last round of NERC Standard Grants for a project investigating deep-ocean sedimentary structures in the Congo Canyon in Africa.
