Top astrophysicist launches PhD fund using prize money

Physicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell has officially launched a PhD scholarship fund to encourage diversity in the discipline using the money from her Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.

Bell Burnell (pictured), the former president of the Institute of Physics, announced in September that she would donate the $3-million (£2.3m) prize to the institute to run studentships for people from underrepresented groups.

The Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund will be administered and managed by the IOP and will be open to all donors who may wish to add to or match the endowment, the institute said on 19 March. The goal of the IOP is to run the initiative for at least 10 years.
