Women in economics earn 13 per cent less than men, survey shows

A survey has highlighted the significant but often overlooked gender pay gap in UK universities’ economics departments.

Researchers at the Universities of York and Sheffield found a gender pay gap of 12.7 per cent based on data collected from 543 academic economists around the country.

Roughly half of this gap could be accounted for by the fact that men are more likely to be promoted to professor, the highest-paid rank.
