Conference hears calls for leaders to be appointed based on values, not academic track record
Universities should recruit academic leaders based on their values and place less emphasis on their academic track record to improve diversity, a senior academic has said.
Reflecting on the barriers she had encountered as a non-white academic on the pathway to senior leadership, Nona McDuff, pro vice-chancellor for students and teaching at Solent University, said the preferred model of leadership in higher education is “middle-class, white, academic, with a strong international research profile”.
