Royal Society protests earthquake jail sentences

The manslaughter conviction of six Italian scientists for giving false safety assurances before the earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy, in 2009 must be protested so that it does not become a legal precedent, say the Royal Society and US National Academy of Sciences.

The scientists, from the Italian National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks, were convicted on 22 October and sentenced to six years in prison.
