Charities unite to fight brain degeneration

A group of charities has pledged to accelerate drug development for degenerative brain diseases by setting up the Neurodegeneration Medicines Acceleration Programme.

The £30m Neuro-MAP programme was launched on 18 November to develop drugs for diseases such as dementia, motor neurone disease and Parkinson’s disease. The aim of the programme, led by the Medical Research Council’s technology transfer organisation MRC Technology, is to identify drug projects that are no longer in development, and help scientists to take them forward to the next stage, MRCT said.

Neuro-MAP will ask pharmaceutical companies to propose projects to take on board, taking on  projects based on patient needs, scientific excellence and commercial potential, according to an MRCT statement.  Projects can also support the repurposing of existing drugs for other conditions.
