Royal Society condemns ‘foolish’ plan to transfer Horizon 2020 funds

Weakening Horizon 2020 by relabelling funds in order to support the European Fund for Strategic Investment "would seem foolish”, Royal Society president Paul Nurse has told European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

In a 4 December letter, Nurse says, “it would be a great shame if a scheme as outstanding and visionary as Horizon 2020, one that has been built up over many years, were to be diminished as a result of short term political expediency.”

On 26 November Juncker outlined a plan to use money from Horizon 2020, the European Investment Bank and the Connecting Europe Facility to foster industry investment in infrastructure, transport and energy. Originally €4 billion was set to be relabeled from Horizon 2020 but this appears to have been reduced to €2.7bn.
