The Royal Astronomical Society is to make up to £600,000 of grants available in 2015 to help scientists, organisations and community groups engage with members of the public as part of its bicentenial celebrations.
The RAS 200: Sky and Earth grants scheme has a total budget of £1m. In this, the first, round it will provide up to £100,000 each to a maximum of six public engagement projects organised by consortia of scientists and other groups.
The RAS says that, unusually, there are few preconditions on the types of projects. Steve Miller, chairman of the grant steering group, said that the RAS wanted ideas that could create a lasting legacy.
