Geologists pick petroleum prospector as president-to-be

The Geological Society has voted Malcolm Brown, executive vice-president of exploration at the fossil fuel company BG Group, as its president-designate.

Brown received 63 per cent of the members’ votes, beating Bruce Levell, a visiting professor in the department of Earth sciences at the University of Oxford and former chief geologist at the fossil fuel company Shell.

Brown’s selection will be put to an annual general meeting of the society on 3 June.
