Sanger renames fellowship to honour Janet Thornton

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute has renamed its fellowship for returning researchers after Janet Thornton, the former director of the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute.

Thornton was director at the EMBL–EBI for 14 years, but announced her decision to step down and work part time in March. Rolf Apweiler and Ewan Birney took over the leadership of the EMBL-EBI on 1 July.

Thornton is a strong supporter of flexible working conditions and an advocate of the Sex in Science programme—a joint effort from the Sanger Institute and the EMBL–EBI to raise awareness about issues facing women in science.
