Rita Gardner, director of the Royal Geographical Society, has announced that she is stepping down after more than 20 years in the role.
The RGS has launched a recruitment process aimed at appointing its next director by April 2018, when Gardner’s term will come to an end.
Since being appointed in 1996, Gardner has worked to modernise the academy, raised £22 million and expanded the RGS’s remit in research and policy, the organisation said in a statement on 29 August.
