Academy of Social Sciences merges top jobs

Members of the Academy of Social Sciences have voted overwhelmingly to combine the roles of president and chair of council into a single position.

The current chairman Roger Goodman (above right), professor of Japanese studies at the University of Oxford, will take on the new role of president for 18 months from December 2019. He will succeed political scientist Ivor Crewe (left), master of University College, Oxford.

After Goodman’s presidential term ends in June 2021, a new president will be appointed. The academy also said it would appoint a number of vice-presidents “in due course”.
