Wellcome rationalises support for young researchers

The Wellcome Trust is closing one of its funding programmes for early-career researchers while extending another, following review of both schemes.

Wellcome is set to end its Seed Awards in Science programme after its 11 March 2019 deadline. The programme currently offers researchers up to £100,000 in funding to develop a novel idea that will go on to form part of a larger grant application. In 2017, the grant funded more than 40 projects.

However, the funder has also announced that it is extending its partnership with the Academy of Medical Sciences’ Springboard Awards for a further three years to 2021. The Springboard Awards support biomedical researchers seeking to establish their own research programmes. The scheme offers up to £100,000 over two years and access to the academy’s mentoring and career-development programme.
