Level up by expanding R&D clusters, says Royal Society

The government should learn from successful innovation clusters and replicate those more widely, says academy

To level up the country, the UK should not create new clusters of R&D excellence from scratch but build up existing capability, the Royal Society has suggested.

Regional rebalancing has long been a priority for prime minister Boris Johnson’s government, which has committed to “levelling up economic opportunity across all nations and regions of the country by investing in infrastructure, innovation and people”.
