Royal Society elects 80 new fellows

Key figures from Covid-19 pandemic join fellowship, including Chris Whitty, Sarah Gilbert and Kate Bingham

Eighty new fellows have been elected to the Royal Society, joining past members such as Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin in the world’s oldest national science academy.

Fellows are selected for their contribution to science and are proposed by existing fellows of the Royal Society, who number around 1,700, including 85 Nobel Prize winners.
