Martin Rees receives Copley Medal for being “most distinguished theoretical astrophysicist of his generation”

Astronomer Royal Martin Rees has topped the list of Royal Society’s award-winners this year.

Rees, a theoretical astrophysicist and former president of the Royal Society, was awarded the Copley Medal, the learned society’s most prestigious award which recognises sustained, outstanding achievements in science. First awarded in 1731, previous recipients of the medal include Louis Pasteur, Dorothy Hodgkin, Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin.
