Royal Society refuses to condemn fossil fuel industry

National science academy says castigating one sector would “not be appropriate” after call from researchers

The Royal Society has said it would “not be appropriate” to issue a condemnation of fossil fuel companies, after more than 2,500 British researchers urged them to do so.

An open letter first published in June 2023 urged the UK’s national science academy to “issue an unambiguous statement about the culpability of the fossil fuel industry in driving the climate crisis”.
