Boost UK R&D spend to keep up with G8, urge star academics

More than 50 researchers including five Nobel laureates have urged the UK government to increase its R&D spending from 0.6 per cent of GDP to at least 0.8 per cent, which is the average spend in the G8 nations.

The call was made in a letter to The Daily Telegraph on 11 March, organised by Science is Vital founder Jennifer Rohn. Signatories include astrophysicist Stephen Hawking from the University of Cambridge, Nobel Laureate Andre Geim from the University of Manchester and astronomer Martin Rees, previous president of the Royal Society.
