A fall in UK patenting relative to other countries may not indicate a failure to commercialise research but rather other countries’ overzealous approach to patenting, PraxisUnico has said.
The not-for-profit organisation, which helps researchers to commercialise their research, was responding to an observation in Thomson Reuters’ 2015 State of Innovation report on global patents.
In its response, published on 27 May, PraxisUnico said that “the number of patents filed is meaningless without knowing what percentage are granted, or noting how many registered patents make it to market”.
