Diana Huffaker, a professor in nanotechnology at the University of California, Los Angeles, is to take up a chair in advanced engineering and materials at Cardiff University, as part of the Welsh government’s drive to attract world-class researchers.
Huffaker will establish a lab at Cardiff to focus on fundamental research and device development, according to a Welsh government announcement on 26 May. This will build on the university’s existing strengths in optoelectronics, semiconductors and materials, it said, and will be part of a joint venture between the university and the technology firm IQE.
Huffaker said she intended to work on the use of nanoscale physics to “collect and transmit information using light with exquisite speed and sensitivity”.
