Innovate UK spent almost twice as much on a per capita basis in the north east of England as anywhere else in the UK in 2013-14.
Figures published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills on 24 June show that the former Technology Strategy Board spent £490 million in 2013-14, with the south east of England receiving the highest proportion by region at £83m. However, when considered on a per-person basis, the north east of England received £27 per head, with the south west far behind in second place on £15.2.
The south east also received the highest proportion of funding from the research councils on a per-area basis, being allocated £633m of the £2.865 billion awarded and just pipping London on £620m. However, London received slightly more per person: £73.7 compared with the south east’s £72.0.
