South London to get a £1-billion cancer hub

The Institute of Cancer Research has announced plans to boost its presence in south London with a cancer research centre with 7,000 staff.

The 20-year plan for the London Cancer Hub was announced on 3 February, and will cost upwards of £1 billion.

The institute has a base in Sutton, south London, but said that the development was required because its cancer therapeutics unit lacked space and facilities. The drug-discovery facilities planned for the site—which will aim to develop at least two more cancer drugs every five years—are expected to cost about £65 million alone, the institute said.
