Data to the rescue

The Alan Turing Institute aims to use data to resolve long-standing ‘wicked’ problems. Lila Randall asks Alan Wilson, its chief executive, how to do so.

What is a ‘wicked’ problem?

It is a problem that governments all over the world have known about for decades but which, after strenuous efforts, have found no solutions to. In the UK, prevalent troubles at the top of some social scientists’ agendas are social disparities—such as housing for everyone—ensuring there is future work for an ageing population and transport congestion. This is by no means an exhaustive list.
