A fully integrated energy-systems research, development and demonstration site has been set up by Newcastle University, Northern Gas Networks and Northern Powergrid.
The Integrated Transport Electricity Gas Research Laboratory is based in Gateshead, alongside the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s National Centre for Energy Systems Integration, the university announced on 11 September.
Phil Taylor, head of engineering at the laboratory, said: “Computer models can only take us so far in understanding energy systems, so there is a critical need for full-scale integrated energy system research and demonstration facilities where new ideas can be trialled and evaluated. The aim is to test the whole energy system and really understand how we need to evolve and adapt to meet future supply and demand.”
