£1m available for innovations in airport security

Up to £1 million in government funding has been allocated for R&D to boost security at UK airports.

The funding for researchers in academia or inductry comes from the Defence and Security Accelerator through its Future Aviation Security Solutions programme. It aims to support the development of innovative ways of screening passengers and cargo at airports, the UK government said in a statement on 5 April.

Dasa, which is managed by the Home Office and the Department for Transport, is requesting proposals in a range of areas, including: the development of hand-held devices to detect metallic and non-metallic threats; matching passengers with their belongings during X-ray screening at airports; and improving the speed of aviation cargo screening.
