By the numbers: UK vs the world

The UK is holding on to its position as a top research nation in the latest international comparison to be released.

British politicians and policy watchers are fond of saying the country “punches above its weight” in research. The latest set of data on the subject from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) shows this is still the case, but staying a research heavyweight gets harder every year.

The pugilistic phrase appears on page eight of the International comparison of the UK research base report published by BEIS on 10 July. Here countries are ranked by their share of the world’s most highly-cited publications. A crucial caveat is attached to this—since 2017 the UK has lost its second-place spot to China.
