UK automotive innovation ‘focused on dirty tech’

Huge potential in transport sector but research may be heading in the wrong direction, says report

The UK is continuing to invest in “dirty” car technologies despite the ongoing global shift to zero-emission vehicles, a team of academics has warned.

Automotive industries are a vital part of the UK’s economy, and a major contributor to R&D spending. But, according to a report from the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and Environment at Imperial College London, much innovation in the UK is still focused on ‘dirty’ technology. Instead it must focus on the electric cars and vans that will be needed as the country strives for zero carbon emissions by phasing out petrol and diesel engines.
