Concern over lack of innovation in ‘foundation industries’

   

Only half of businesses vital to manufacturing and construction pushing new products and services

Research commissioned by the government’s national research funder has uncovered a huge dearth of innovation in so-called ‘foundation industry’ businesses that underpin whole sectors of the economy.

There are some 7,000 businesses producing materials deemed vital for manufacturing and construction in six such industries in the UK: cement, ceramics, chemicals, glass, paper and metals.
