British Academy criticises Plan S

Subscription journals are necessary for the publication of high-quality research in the humanities and social sciences, the UK national academy for these disciplines has said.

In a commentary published this month in response to the launch of Plan S, the Europe-wide initiative by research funders to increase uptake of open-access publication, the academy said it was right to oppose excessive profits in scientific publishing.
