The government should change its stance on access to higher education by reducing university tuition fees to £6,000 per year, Shabana Mahmood, Labour MP for Birmingham, Ladywood, said in a House of Commons debate on 11 September.
The government had “torn up” the partnership model of university funding between taxpayer and student, Mahmood said, and an 80 per cent cut in teaching grants for universities and a trebling of tuition fees betrayed future generations.
