First horsemeat DNA tests to report in April

A three-month programme of DNA testing of beef products across the EU is to publish its first report by 15 April, the Conservative secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, Owen Paterson, said on 14 February.

In a statement in the House of Commons, Paterson said that in addition, domestic and imported horsemeat will be tested for the equine drug, bute. The changes, he added, introduce a programme of testing real products, rather than the current system, which is based on paperwork.
