CBI urges businesses to make robust case for EU

Business should “turn up the volume” and speak out against Britain’s exit from the European Union, according to the president of the business lobby group the CBI.

In a speech at the 50th anniversary dinner of the organisation on 20 May, Mike Rake will urge business to speak out early in favour of remaining in a reformed EU. “No-one has yet set out a credible alternative future to EU membership,” Rake will say, adding that “the current alternatives are not realistic options: little or no influence and the obligation to comply with EU principles whilst still paying most of the costs".

Rake will say that the EU is important to the UK’s prosperity but will add that the union is “far from perfect”, citing employment law as one example of “poorly thought out legislation”.
