President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will pull out of the Paris agreement on climate change including the UN’s Green Climate Fund, a move that could significantly slow down global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The US will “cease all implementation” of the Paris agreement and end the “draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes” on the US, Trump said in a long-awaited announcement on 1 June.
The Paris agreement, signed in December 2015 and adopted by 195 countries—all UN members except Nicaragua and Syria—commits governments to limit the rise in global average temperatures to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. It also aims to increase resilience to climate change impact in developing countries.
