Gove v Fox: Defra seeks upper hand in Brexit food debate

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has said that animal welfare and food safety will not be compromised as the UK moves to exit the European Union.

The intervention from Defra, which is headed by Michael Gove, follows a visit to the United States by the secretary of state for international trade Liam Fox.

Any UK/US trade deal seems likely to include agriculture, however, there are stark differences between how animal welfare and food safety are regulated in Europe and the US.
