Local authorities must adapt to stay relevant, says report

Local councils must change how they operate to cope with constant cuts to their funding, according to the centre-right think tank, the Social Market Foundation.

The call comes in a report funded by insurers Zurich Municipal and published on 12 July. It was released shortly after the Local Government Association announced that local authorities were expected to lose 75 per cent of their government funding by 2020.

This is funding used to pay for services such as care for the elderly and for disabled people; protecting children; along with community services such as collecting waste and filling potholes. Some 168 councils are expected to face cuts to this budget.
