Brexit negotiations hit a wall

The third round of Brexit talks has ended without substantive progress on citizens’ rights or the role of the European Court of Justice, the European Union’s chief negotiator has said.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels today, Michel Barnier said that the latest round of negotiations, which began on 29 August, did not lead to “any decisive progress on any of the principal subjects”, although a discussion on the future of the border between the EU and Northern Ireland was “fruitful”.

According to Barnier, the British government’s demands relating to access to the EU single market are “impossible”.
