Innovate UK seeks smart energy for cleaner cars

The UK needs to create the supply chains and infrastructure needed to make electric vehicles a mainstream option, according to the government’s innovation agency Innovate UK.

The call was made in a five-year review of the agency’s network of technology centres, Catapult Network—Fostering innovation to drive economic growth, published on 3 August.

The report echoes the concerns of environmental groups that the UK cannot generate or transport sufficient energy to meet the goal of having 50 per cent of cars and vans powered by electric or hybrid engines by 2030.
